Product Details:

Details:
The dark wood in these earrings is from white oak logs that were part of a dam on the Hocking River in Athens County Ohio. The dam was built in the 1830's as part of the Ohio canal system. These logs have been submerged under the river since the 1830's until they were removed in early 2019. When the logs were cut in the 1830's they were approximately 200 years old, meaning they were virgin timber and started out as seedlings in the 1630's. With this purchase, you can own a piece of this amazing wood.
The light wood in these earrings is from spalted maple. Spalting is a process that usually begins after a tree dies.  Different fungi begin to break down the wood fibers resulting in black, brown and grey lines giving the wood a marbled appearance.  The breaking down process stops when the wood is dried.
